The ±15% OE Performance Equivalence Rule
Under ECE R90 standards, the replacement brake pad's mean friction coefficient and braking distance under various speeds and temperatures must fall within ±15% of the original vehicle manufacturer's OE pad. This prevents both under-braking (dangerous stopping distance) and over-braking (premature wheel lock-up or uneven bias).
- Cold Bedding-in Performance: Evaluated after controlled burnishing cycles to ensure immediate out-of-the-box stopping power.
- Speed Sensitivity Test: Measures friction stability when braking from 30% to 80% of vehicle maximum speed (Vmax).
- High-Temperature Fade & Recovery: Multiple consecutive high-energy snubs to prove friction does not degrade dangerously under heat.
Mechanical Integrity: Shear Strength & Compressibility (ISO 6312 & ISO 6310)
In addition to friction curves, ECE R90 enforces strict mechanical bond criteria to prevent catastrophic pad failure.
- Shear Strength Test (ISO 6312): The friction compound must withstand immense hydraulic shearing forces without debonding from the steel backing plate (minimum shear stress > 2.5–3.5 N/mm² depending on surface area).
- Compressibility Test (ISO 6310): Ensures the friction material does not compress excessively at ambient or elevated temperatures (400°C), preventing a spongy brake pedal feel.
How to Decode Legitimate ECE R90 Backplate Markings
Every compliant brake pad must feature indelible laser etching or stamping directly on the backing plate or shim.
- Circle with "E" and Country Code: E.g., E1 (Germany), E4 (Netherlands), E9 (Spain), E11 (UK).
- Regulation Code: 90R indicates Regulation 90 homologation.
- Approval & Extension Number: Unique certificate number issued by the designated European transport authority.
- Batch & Traceability Code: Enables full traceability back to the exact factory raw material lot and pressing cycle.
Distributor Checklist for Auditing Supplier E-Mark Credentials
Protect your business against customs seizures and product liability by requesting three verifiable documents from your manufacturer.
- 1. Official Certificate of Conformity (CoC) issued by an accredited European technical service (e.g., TÜV, VCA, Idiada).
- 2. Model Coverage Schedule confirming the specific WVA part numbers you are purchasing are listed on the certificate.
- 3. IATF 16949 / Factory Audit records proving Conformity of Production (CoP) consistency.
