Understanding the US NSF LeafMark™ Rating System
To protect marine ecosystems from toxic copper runoff, US state laws require third-party certification of all friction materials.
- Level A (One Leaf): Free of cadmium, hexavalent chromium, lead, mercury, and asbestiform fibers (<0.1%).
- Level B (Two Leaves): Meets Level A criteria and limits copper content to less than 5.0% by weight.
- Level N (Three Leaves - Mandatory): Meets Level A criteria and limits copper content to strictly less than 0.5% by weight (virtually zero copper).
Replacing Copper: Engineering Alternative Heat Conductors
Copper has traditionally provided exceptional thermal conductivity, smooth lubrication, and stable high-temperature friction. Developing zero-copper formulations requires sophisticated replacement materials.
- Synthetic graphites and carbon fiber matrices for high-speed thermal dissipation.
- Potassium titanate whiskers and mineral silicates for friction stability up to 600°C.
- Engineered non-ferrous soft alloys for smooth pedal feel and minimal rotor wear.
Euro 7 Brake Dust Particulate Emissions (PM10 / PM2.5)
The European Union's Euro 7 standards expand vehicle emissions monitoring to include brake wear particulate matter. Formulations must now be optimized not only for friction, but for ultra-low particle shedding under standardized Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycles (WLTC).
